Chapter Seven

Friends

As Rebecca hung up the phone, she hoped she had sounded convincing enough for her mother this time. She hated worrying her like this. It was the fourth call this week.

In reality, she wasn’t being completely dishonest when her mom had asked how she was ‘holding up’ since Brett ‘broke her heart.’ Truthfully, she wasn’t entirely ‘fine,’ as she had told her mom, but she definitely wasn’t herself yet either.

At this point, Brett hadn’t actually been on her mind as much anymore. Yes, his infidelity had hurt her, and it had taken time to come to terms with what he had done to her, but that wasn’t the sole reason she had become an intentional shut-in for the past few weeks. That unfortunate incident seemed to only open the door to so much more.

Throughout most of Rebecca’s life she had learned to systematically block the painful memories of her childhood. Putting up walls and compartmentalizing feelings of the past had become second nature. Over the years and well into adulthood, she had become an expert at protecting herself with a thick skin while denying her true feelings. It was like breathing.

As she picked up the family photo album she had looked through so many times over the past few weeks, she closed her eyes, took a long cleansing breath, and finally allowed herself to reach deep into her psyche and remember. Letting the memories flood her mind was something she had resisted for years, but as she had recently come to realize, something necessary to move forward.

As painful as it was.
